2018 marks the 19th annual Reelout Queer Film + Video Festival. Over the years, we have screened more than 1100 films from countries around the world, with special focuses on Iceland, Spain, India, Sweden, and China. Reelout has also guest curated Canadian short programs for festivals in Turkey and the United Kingdom. 2017 was a record-breaking year for the festival, with more than 1200 attendees.
Reelout Queer Film + Video Festival is the second largest queer festival in Ontario and the longest-running film festival in Kingston. The festival celebrates Kingston’s diversity and promotes public awareness and understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, questioning, and intersex communities. Reelout’s magnitude and longevity is unique among small-city film festivals. Community support has been key to Reelout’s success, and its continued viability relies on the support of donors. Please consider the value of your financial contribution to Reelout’s future.

Your donation matters
Every donation to Reelout, even small ones, goes a long way. Here is an approximate overview of the costs involved in providing audiences with the unique and outstanding viewing experience that Reelout is known for. We pay each and every artist whose work is selected to screen during the festival.
- A film screening costs between $100 and $500; Reelout programs more than 65 movies every year, which amounts to fees between $6500 and $32,500;
- Travel fees for guest filmmakers amount to $500 each, and up to 10 filmmakers are invited to speak at the festival each year, adding up to $5000 of operating costs;
- The location of the venue along is $6000 each year;
- Printing the program costs the organization around $1500.
Outside of the festival, Reelout continues to be active and to program different events, most of which are free for the audiences. These activities also require important resources.
- Masterclasses, for example, cost around $1200 each to put together;
- Operating the lending library year-round costs more than $28,000.
What else do we do?
Reelout Arts Project Inc. tends the Reelout Community Library, which acquires queer, Canadian and international film and/or video on DVD format for the purposes of fostering gender and sexual diversity education to citizens of Kingston and Lennox, Frontenac and Addington counties who lack accessibility to these resources or may feel isolated from queer culture, or may wish to increase their awareness of LGBTQ+ issues.
Reelout also reaches out directly to the community. The Reelout in Schools Project offers educational resource DVDs to public schools, workplaces, rural communities, and other community-serving agencies in Kingston and the surrounding areas. Reelout works with these groups to present films based on their needs and caters the program to best suit the age and social issue needing to be addressed. When possible, Reelout provides relevant guest speakers.
Risks and Reliability
As a non-profit organization, we will always face the challenge of relying on support from our community to sustain our activities. While Reelout’s $100,000 annual operating budget is funded by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Kingston, and the Kingston Arts Council, we rely on many more community partners and sponsors to support the festival. We need more resources to continue to grow.
When you donate $20 or more, you automatically become a member of Reelout Arts Project Inc. The membership is valid for 12 months from the date of donation and gives voting rights at our AGM (Annual General Meeting) (if donation is completed two months prior to the AGM). Budgets are voted at the AGM, thus we ensure full reliability with our donors, who are more than welcome to exert their voting rights. We encourage all members to exercise their right to vote.
Reelout Arts Project Inc. is incorporated as an Ontario non-profit organization (#001629494), and a registered charitable organization (#85864 8371 RR0001). Copies of Reelout Arts Project Inc.’s by-laws, policies and code of conduct are available to the community-at-large.
