Blair Dorosh-Walther/75min/USA/2014 \nOUT IN THE NIGHT is a documentary that tells the story of a group of young friends\, African American lesbians who are out\, one hot August night in 2006\, in the gay friendly neighborhood of New York City. They are all in their late teens and early twenties and come from a low-income neighborhood in Newark\, New Jersey. As the friends walk under the hot neon lights of tattoo parlors in the West Village\, an older man sexually and violently confronts them and a fight begins\, captured by security cameras nearby. As the fight comes to an end\, all get up and walk away. But 911 has been called and the man involved has been stabbed. Police swarm to the scene as their radios blast out warning of a gang attack. The women are rounded up and charged with gang assault\, assault and attempted murder. Three of the women plead guilty. But Renata\, Patreese\, Venice and friend Terrain claim their innocence. They are called a “Gang of Killer Lesbians” by the media. Allison Berg & Frank Keraudren/101min/USA/2013 \nIn August 1972\, John Wojtowicz attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to finance his lover’s sex-reassignment surgery. The act resulted in a 14-hour hostage situation that was broadcast on TV. Three years later Al Pacino portrayed his crime in Dog Day Afternoon. When he emerged from a 6-year prison term\, he was known as “The Dog.”

 Directors Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren began filming THE DOG in 2002. Their long-term dedication pays off in this unforgettable portrait capturing all of the subject’s complexity: he is\, by turns\, lovable\, maniacal\, heroic\, and self-destructive. 

Drawing upon extraordinary archival footage\, the film shuffles between the 1970s and the 2000s. We gain a historic perspective on New York’s gay liberation movement\, in which Wojtowicz played an active role. In later footage\, he remains a subversive force\, backed by the unconditional love of his mother Terry\, whose wit and charm infuse the film.
