SUMMARY:PRIDE DENIED: HOMONATIONALISM & The Future of Queer Politics
DESCRIPTION:PRIDE DENIED: HOMONATIONALISM & The Future of Queer Politics d. Kami Chisholm/62min/Canada/2016 \nMany North American LGBTQ pride events initially emerged out of sites of revolt and resistance— such as the anti-police riots at the Stonewall Inn in NYC in 1969 and the protests that began after police bathhouse raids in Toronto 1981. Today\, however\, PRIDE™ is big business. Non-profits formed for the purpose of hosting pride events in cities such as Toronto\, San Francisco\, and New York. In Pride Denied\, queer and trans activists and artists call for a return to prioritizing political activism and community support that characterized the emergence of the contemporary LGBT rights movement more than 40 years ago. \nWatch the TRAILER \nKami Chisholm is a queer\, disabled\, activist filmmaker and arts curator whose work focuses on dismantling white supremacy\, ending settler colonialism\, and the quest for justice for those commonly denied access to the means to live and thrive. Chisholm has been making films for more than 20 years\, since beginning her BA in Film Production and English from Loyola Marymount University. She also holds a PhD in History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies from the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and an MFA in Film Production from York University. Her most recently completed documentary\, Pride Denied (released in 2016 and distributed by Media Education Foundation and Vtape)\, explores topics such as homonationalism and pinkwashing in the context of the 2014 World Pride festival in Toronto. \nCommunity Sponsor: Queen’s University Department of Sociology

SUMMARY:GENDER BENDERS: Shorts Program
DESCRIPTION:Gender Benders: Shorts Program \nThis collection of narrative and documentary short films focus on the lives\, both real and imagined\, of people whose gender identities do not fit within conventional gender binary concepts. All but one of our docs was made by Canadian filmmakers that focus on Canadian subjects both young and not-so-young. The New Zealand doc Medulla Oblongata takes a more fantastic approach to doc story-telling as do the Canadian narratives In My Mother’s Closet\, LIMINA and the UK narrative DUSK.   All of these films however avoid the usual trans-narratives to tell their stories\, making for a refreshing and engaging viewing experience. \nHandsome and Majestic d. Jeff Lee Petry & Nathan Drillot/12:08/Canada/2017 \n“Handsome & Majestic” follows the story of Milan Halikowski\, a teenager from the rural city of Prince George\, BC. As a recently transitioned transgender boy\, Milan deals with discrimination and abuse from his peers and teachers at school\, as he seeks to find other kids like himself. Throughout these hardships\, he becomes a role model and an advocate for trans people in his small community and beyond. \n Limina d.Florian Halbedl & Joshua M. Ferguson/15:00/Canada/2016 \nA magical gender-fluid child named Alessandra\, led by innocence and intuition\, is so curious about the lives of the inhabitants of a small town that they decide to play an active part in an unknown woman’s mourning process. \nIn My Mother’s Closet d. Adri Almeida and Carolyn Wu /12:50/Canada/2017                                                                \nA film that explores the intersections of being brown\, trans\, and a woman. Through song and the support of her best friend\, Adri reconciles the struggle of wanting to belt out her truth while not wanting to risk her relationship with her religious mother. \nHome Made d.Diana Khong/14:44/Canada/2017 \nHome Made is an intimate\, contemplative portrait of two queer tattoo artists navigating an industry traditionally dominated by white\, straight\, cisgender males. Through their trials and triumphs\, the film weaves together the parallel narratives of Jasmine\, a shop owner in Philadelphia\, and Sally\, a stick-and-poke artist in Brooklyn. \nDo I have Boobs Now? d. Joella Cabalu & Milena Salazar/6:30/Canada/2017 \nIn 2015\, Victoria-based trans activist Courtney Demone launched the viral online campaign #DoIHaveBoobsNow\, in which she posted topless photos of her transition on social media while undergoing hormone replacement therapy. One year later\, Courtney revisits the global conversation she catalyzed on social media censorship policies and the sexualization of feminine bodies\, and reflects on the impacts of being thrust into the critical spotlight as a visible trans activist and queer feminist. \nMedulla Oblongata d. Roberto Nascimento/7:31/New Zealand/2017 \nGranted refugee status in New Zealand due to the persecution he faced for being gay in the Maldives- student Abraham Naim creates his alter ego – the powerful and sassy drag queen Medulla Oblongata\, a notable figure in the Auckland LGBTQ scene. \nTake A Walk on The Wild Side d. Lisa Rideout/14:56/Canada/2017 \nThis charming documentary short provides viewers with a glimpse into a day in the life of Paddy\, a caring independent business owner\, and her Toronto store called Wildside\, one of the only places to offer a full male to female transformation through makeup\, clothing and hair. \nDusk d.Jake Graff/15:00/United Kingdom/2017 \nThis short film is told through flashbacks over several decades of our protagonist ‘Chris’’s lifetime\, exploring how the choices we make can change our lives fundamentally. \n  \n  97 minutes approximate    \nCommunity Sponsor: TransFamily Kingston

DESCRIPTION:GIRL UNBOUND: THE WAR TO BE HER d. Erin Heidenreich/80min/Canada/Pakistan/Documentary Feature \n“I want to tell girls fear is taught\, but you are born free and brave. There’s no doubt the Taliban seek to school women in anxiety and obedience\, forbidding women to take part in pastimes such as singing\, dancing and sports. “I broke all the laws\,” she adds\, “God help me.” – Maria Toorpakai \nGirl Unbound is both a suspenseful drama and intimate portrait of both the Taliban-occupied Waziristan and Maria Toorpakai\, who defies threats to her and her family from Islamic fundamentalists in order to represent Pakistan as an internationally competitive squash player. \nIn Waziristan\, where sports for women are decried as un-Islamic\, and girls rarely leave their houses\, young Maria Toorpakai defies the rules by disguising herself as a boy\, so she can play sports freely. DESCRIPTION:The Fabulous Allan Carr d. Jeffrey Schwarz/2017/USA/90min/Documentary Feature \nFrom the filmmaker who brought us the Reelout fave “I Am Divine” comes a highly-entertaining\, guilty-pleasure recount of an overweight\, average-looking gay boy who realizes his dream of being Rock Hudson will never come true\, so instead\, he breaks on to the Hollywood scene on his own terms. \nArmed with a limitless Rolodex and a Benedict Canyon enclave with its own disco\, Allan Carr threw the Hollywood parties that defined the 1970s. SUMMARY:THE FEELS
DESCRIPTION:The Feels d. Jenee Lamarque/90min/2017/USA/2017/Comedy/Narrative Feature \nAndi (Fresh Off The Boat’s Constance Wu) and Lu (Angela Trimbur) are excited to celebrate their upcoming wedding with a joint bachelorette weekend in wine country. On the first night\, the brides and their friends get wasted\, and Lu admits to everyone that she’s never had an orgasm. This admission comes as a complete surprise to Andi and derails the weekend in unexpected and poignant ways. It causes everyone to reflect on trust\, love\, and their journeys to experiencing their first orgasm. \n“The film’s refusal to pan the camera away during Andi and Lu’s affectionate moments is a striking break from the mere morsels typically given to queer viewers of films with LGBTQ characters. Every shot of the couple is a statement written in bold\, an insistence that queer stories are to be told\, emphasized and characterized as more than just side plots.” –Caroline Smith\, The Daily Californian \nWatch an Exclusive Clip! \nCommunity Sponsor: Skeleton Park Arts Festival

SUMMARY:ALASKA IS A DRAG
DESCRIPTION:ALASKA IS A DRAG d. Shaz Bennett/2017/USA/90min \nALASKA IS A DRAG is a fish out of water story – literally. Our hero Leo is an aspiring superstar (Martin L. Washington Jr.) stuck working in a fish cannery in Alaska. Leo sees disco balls in the scales of the fish he slices. Everyone who slices fish all day\, daydreams – Leo’s are just more glamtastic. Most of the time\, Leo and his twin sister Tristen (Maya Washington) are left to fend for themselves. To escape the monotony of fist fights and fish guts\, they create their own magic\, the Northern Lights follow them as they vogue down a woodsy path. They hang out at the one gay bar in a hundred miles\, owned by their surly surrogate mom – Jan (Margaret Cho). \nTheir real mom (Nia Peeples) left years ago and their dad George (Kevin Daniels) preaches on the side of the road. After years of getting beat up by his former best friend\, Kyle (Christopher O’Shea)\, Leo has learned to fight back – his skills catch the eye of his cannery boss\, an amateur boxer (Jason Scott Lee) who offers to train him to be a fighter. \nAnd when the new kid in town\, Declan (Matt Dallas)\, wants to be his sparring partner – Leo’s worlds begin to collide\, Tristen enters Leo in a drag competition – he’s never performed for anyone but her – the drag audition falls on the same day as the qualifying round for boxing and Leo has to face the real reason he’s afraid to leave Alaska.  Watch a CLIP. \n  \nCommunity Sponsor: Education on Queer Issues Project

SUMMARY:VENUS
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 10th 4:30pm CLOSING GALA FILM \nVENUS d. Eisha Marjara/95min/Canada/2017/Comedy/Narrative Feature \nSid is under pressure to marry a nice Indian girl and raise a family. Sid’s East Indian mother yearns to have grandchildren. Her dreams are about to come true\, but not in the way she could have ever imagined. When Sid comes out as a woman\, 14-year old Ralph literally shows up at her door announcing that Sid is his dad. Ralph thinks having a transgender parent is pretty cool. \nBut Ralph hasn’t told his mother and step dad that he’s tracked down his biological father. And then there is Sid’s boyfriend Daniel\, who has yet to tell his family of his relationship with Sid. Daniel is nowhere near ready to accept Ralph as a stepson and complicate his life further. \nSid’s coming out has a snowball effect that forces everyone out of the closet. \nGenders\, generations and cultures collide in this comedy about the modern family unit. Eisha Marjara’s feature debut manages to find just the right life-affirming tone for the subject matter of the film. With tenderness and humour\, she delivers a resounding plea for casting off gender stereotypes. \nWatch Trailer
